Having a roof over your head is right up there in importance with food and clothing. Of course, if that roof is worn or starting to fall apart, it can be more trouble than good. A good portion of your income goes to paying your mortgage so you do not want to have to do major repairs to the house because you neglected the roof. Luckily, maintaining the top of your home is not that difficult when you do so regularly. Here are a few tips that will ensure the building does not end up coming down on you.

Inspection

The most important aspect of maintaining the roof of your home is to inspect it regularly. It is very easy to forget about this and just go about your life. Take the time to look up as you approach the front door on your way in from work. Walk around the house looking at the underside of the roof and then step back to see as much of the top as you can. You should also get the ladder out at least once a year to go up and take a closer look at what is going on up there. You want to make note of any missing shingles or tiles, and any problems with the flashing. Finally, go into the attic or crawl space and look at the underside to see if there are any dark spots or obvious leaks.

Clean

If everything looks good, the next step is to clean the surface. This is especially important if there is any moss growing as it can creep under the roofing, lifting it, and allowing water to get underneath. This will cause damage to the wood of the roof and make any repairs a much bigger deal.

Repair or Replace

If you notice any missing shingles or tiles, you need to replace them as soon as possible. If you are not comfortable doing this you will need to contact a professional roofer to do the job. While up there doing the work, it is important to check the integrity of the wood under the roofing. If the wood has been damaged it too will need to be replaced.

While you can replace some shingles yourself if you see that a good portion of the roof has torn or missing shingles you may want to have a roofer come to do the work for you. If you notice any leaks in the attic you may also want to have pros come to check things out. It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where the problem is and you may end up tearing up good shingles while trying to fix things.
